We are looking for a Breeder Assistant to support the pea breeder with day-to-day tasks related to pea breeding.

What will you do?

As a Breeder Assistant, you will work closely with the breeder in executing annual breeding plans and activities to assist with all pea breeding activities. It is a hands-on role, and you will be busy with activities including planting, crossing, tissue sampling, note-taking, and harvest.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Plan and coordinate breeding field trials and work with service providers to implement trial protocols.
  • Collect high-quality, high-throughput phenotype data for field plots, plants, and seeds.
  • Monitor fields for plant diseases, pests, and other stress conditions.
  • Engage with field inspectors and other external organizations for phytosanitary approvals.
  • Coordinate field activities with service providers.
  • Coordinate post-season activities, including seed cleaning, sorting, packaging, inventory, and logistics.
  • Work closely with winter nurseries to coordinate and monitor seed logistics, including inventory, packaging, shipping, etc.
  • Coordinate product delivery and receiving activities with domestic and international service providers.
  • Conduct inventory control of seeds, including generating a monthly report.
What will you bring?
  • BSc in Agronomy/Plant Biology or related field.
  • Experience with pea research nursery trials of at least 3 years.
  • Experience with pea or legume phenotypic data collection
  • Work efficiently and effectively individually and as part of a team.
  • Strong research capabilities, problem-solving, and creative thinking skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
And also:
  • Experience with standard farm machinery (tractors, combines, etc.) operation and maintenance – Preferred.
  • Able to work extended days and weekends during critical times, particularly during crossing and harvest season.
  • Valid driver’s license and willing to drive alone or with others.
  • Able and willing to perform physical work indoors and outdoors that may involve repetitive motion, lifting up to 50 lbs. – sitting or standing for extended periods, and exposure to different weather conditions.
  • Able to work collaboratively with people of diverse backgrounds and   experiences.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite and Android OS.
